अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न
What's the difference between Sensex and Nifty 50?
Sensex is the Bombay Stock Exchange's benchmark index, built from 30 large companies; Nifty 50 is the National Stock Exchange's equivalent, built from 50. Both are free-float market-cap weighted and many of the same large companies sit in both, so the two almost always move in the same direction, just not by the exact same percentage on any given day.
Are NSE and BSE the same thing?
No, they're separate exchanges, but most large Indian companies list on both. A stock's price on NSE and BSE stays essentially identical throughout the day, since any real gap gets traded away almost instantly by arbitrage.
What are the trading hours for Indian stock markets?
NSE and BSE both trade 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST, Monday to Friday, with a pre-open session from 9:00 to 9:15 AM used to set a fair opening price. Markets are closed on weekends and on a published list of trading holidays.
Why is the market closed today, or open for a short special session?
Check the exchanges' published holiday calendar first, Indian markets close for a number of national and religious holidays through the year. One notable exception is Diwali: markets are otherwise shut for the holiday but hold a short symbolic 'Muhurat trading' session in the evening, a tradition rather than a regular trading day.
Is the data on this page the exchanges' official real-time feed?
No, prices here come from Yahoo Finance's public market-data feed, refreshed every few minutes, which is useful for tracking movement but isn't the same low-latency feed a broker's trading terminal uses. Confirm the live price with your broker before actually placing a trade.
What is India VIX?
India VIX is NSE's volatility index, built from Nifty options prices, and shows how much movement traders expect over the next 30 days, not a price level like Sensex or Nifty. A low VIX (roughly under 15) signals a calm market, while a high VIX (above 20-25) signals traders are bracing for sharp swings in either direction.
What is Sensex, Nifty 50 & Indian Stock Markets?
India has two main stock exchanges, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), and each publishes its own headline index to track how the market as a whole is doing. Sensex is the BSE's index, built from 30 of the largest, most established companies listed there; Nifty 50 is the NSE's equivalent, built from 50 large companies across sectors. Neither index is the market itself, they're a sample used as a barometer: when Sensex or Nifty rises, it broadly means investors are buying more than selling, and when it falls, the opposite. Millions of Indians who've never bought a single share still hear these numbers on the news daily, since they're treated as a rough proxy for how the country's economy and biggest companies are doing overall.
How Indian Stock Markets Work (NSE & BSE)
Both exchanges trade Monday to Friday, 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST (excluding market holidays), with a short pre-open session from 9:00 to 9:15 AM used to set the day's opening price fairly. Sensex and Nifty are both free-float market-capitalisation weighted, meaning a company's influence on the index depends on its total market value (share price times shares actually available for public trading, excluding promoter holdings locked in), so a large company's price swing moves the index far more than a small company's identical percentage swing. This site's live Sensex, Nifty and individual stock prices come from Yahoo Finance's public market-data feed, refreshed every few minutes during trading hours; NSE.com and BSE.com are the exchanges' own official sources for anyone who wants the primary data directly.
How to Read Market Data (Green Days, Red Days, Circuit Breakers)
Green means an index or stock is trading above its previous close, red means below; the colour has nothing to do with the exchanges themselves, it's just the universal convention every financial site and app uses. A circuit breaker is a regulatory safety pause: if Sensex or Nifty moves sharply enough in a single session, SEBI's market-wide rules trigger a trading halt (the exact duration depends on how large the move is and what time of day it happens), specifically to stop panic buying or selling from spiralling before calmer heads can catch up. Trading volume adds context to a price move: a big rise on unusually high volume suggests broad conviction behind it, while the same rise on thin volume is a weaker, less reliable signal.
Best Times to Check Markets & Seasonal Patterns
Checking global cues, US market closing levels, Asian markets opening, crude oil prices, before Indian markets open at 9:15 AM gives a rough sense of which way the day might lean, since Indian markets often take an early cue from overnight global moves. Certain days are reliably more volatile than routine trading: the Union Budget (usually 1 February) regularly produces sharp swings as investors react to tax and policy announcements, and each company's quarterly earnings day can move that stock sharply regardless of the broader market's mood. There's no dependable seasonal "best month" backed by real evidence, talk of festive-buying or year-end patterns is common market folklore rather than something to plan a strategy around. For long-term investors, a broad market downturn is generally considered a better entry point than a market that's already risen sharply, which is the basic logic behind continuing a SIP (systematic investment plan) through a fall rather than pausing it.
Why Stock Markets Matter: Wealth, Jobs & the Economy
Economic impact: Sensex and Nifty are widely watched as a rough real-time barometer of investor confidence in the Indian economy, though the link is a general one, not a precise formula, a rising market reflects optimism about company earnings and growth, not a guaranteed prediction of GDP itself. India's stock market is one of the largest in the world by total value of listed companies, and it's also a genuine channel for the economy to raise money: when a company lists new shares or raises debt, that capital funds real expansion, hiring and factories, not just a number on a screen.
Personal finance impact: For individuals, equities have historically been one of the few investment options that outpaces inflation over long stretches, which is why many financial advisors suggest at least some equity exposure alongside safer options like the Public Provident Fund (PPF) or fixed deposits for retirement planning, though past performance is never a guarantee of future returns and markets can and do fall sharply for extended periods. Many of India's largest listed companies also pay a portion of profits back to shareholders as dividends, a small but real extra return on top of any price gain. A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP), investing a fixed amount every month regardless of whether the market is up or down, is a common way Indian retail investors build equity exposure gradually rather than trying to time a single lump-sum entry.
Decision-making impact: A market that's fallen 10 to 15 percent from a recent high is generally viewed as a more attractive entry point than one that's already risen sharply, since buying after a fall means paying less for the same ownership stake. A market that's risen 15 to 20 percent in a short window, on the other hand, is often flagged by analysts as due for a pause or a pullback, chasing that kind of rally is a common way retail investors buy near a short-term top. A genuinely useful habit: when retail investor sentiment turns unusually nervous while institutional buying stays steady, that gap has historically been treated as a sign of underlying strength rather than panic being justified, though it's a general pattern, not a rule that holds every single time.
