Asian Games Medal Tally Puts India 5th, Above Kazakhstan With 77

India ends Day 13 of the 2026 Asian Games fifth on the medal table with 76 medals, 16 of them gold, while Kazakhstan sits three places lower with 77. That is not an error. The Asian Games table, like the Olympic one, ranks countries by gold medals first and only looks at silver and bronze to break ties. India took six golds on 2 October alone, through the women’s recurve archery team, boxers Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal, wrestler Sujeet Kalkal and the women’s hockey team. Those six lifted it to fifth.
How the medal table is actually ranked
Under the International Olympic Committee convention the Asian Games follow, one gold outranks any number of silvers. Total medals do not count at all except as the last tiebreaker. That produces two quirks right around India’s position this year: Uzbekistan is fourth with 11 fewer medals than India because it has four more golds, and Kazakhstan is eighth despite having one more medal than India because 44 of its 77 are bronze.
| Rank | Country | Gold | Silver | Bronze | Total | Share gold |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | China | 162 | 81 | 73 | 316 | 51% |
| 2 | Japan | 72 | 83 | 85 | 240 | 30% |
| 3 | South Korea | 33 | 39 | 62 | 134 | 25% |
| 4 | Uzbekistan | 20 | 23 | 22 | 65 | 31% |
| 5 | India | 16 | 25 | 35 | 76 | 21% |
| 6 | Iran | 15 | 17 | 13 | 45 | 33% |
| 7 | Thailand | 15 | 11 | 17 | 43 | 35% |
| 8 | Kazakhstan | 12 | 21 | 44 | 77 | 16% |
| 9 | Bahrain | 11 | 5 | 6 | 22 | 50% |
The last column is where India loses ground. Only 21% of India’s medals are gold, against 51% for China and 31% for Uzbekistan. On a table sorted by total medals India would still be fifth, just behind Kazakhstan instead of Uzbekistan, so the ranking rule changes who India is chasing more than where it stands.
Where India’s 76 medals came from
Athletics and shooting together account for 39 of the 76 medals, more than half, but only four of the 16 golds. Archery and boxing are the opposite: 13 medals between them, seven of them gold. That split explains most of India’s low gold share.
| Sport | Gold | Silver | Bronze | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Athletics | 1 | 9 | 14 | 24 |
| Shooting | 3 | 8 | 4 | 15 |
| Archery | 4 | 2 | 1 | 7 |
| Boxing | 3 | 0 | 3 | 6 |
| Squash | 0 | 2 | 3 | 5 |
| Wrestling | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 |
| Sailing | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| Kabaddi | 2 | 0 | 0 | 2 |
| Cricket | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Hockey | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Weightlifting | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Wushu | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Seven other sports, one bronze each | 0 | 0 | 7 | 7 |
Athletics is the clearest case. India has 24 athletics medals, a third of its haul, but the women’s 4×400 m relay is its only athletics gold. That relay win, and the 44-year streak behind it, is covered in our piece on the relay gold, and Seema Kumari’s medal earlier in the Games ended a separate 16-year wait.
How 2026 compares with Jakarta and Hangzhou
| Games | Gold | Silver | Bronze | Total | Rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2018 Jakarta-Palembang | 16 | 23 | 31 | 70 | 8th |
| 2023 Hangzhou | 28 | 38 | 41* | 107* | 4th |
| 2026 Aichi-Nagoya (after Day 13) | 16 | 25 | 35 | 76 | 5th |
India has already passed its Jakarta total of 70 and matched Jakarta’s 16 golds. Hangzhou’s record is out of reach: India would need around 31 more medals and 12 more golds with only one day of competition left. The fair reading is that 2026 is already India’s second-best Asian Games by medal count, and a clear step down from Hangzhou on golds.
What can still change on 3 October
Two team finals on the final day of competition could each add a gold. The men’s cricket team plays Pakistan for gold at 10:00 AM IST, the first time the two sides have met in the men’s event at the Asian Games. The men’s hockey team, the defending champions, play Malaysia at 3:30 PM IST, with a direct place at the LA 2028 Olympics going to the winner. Indian athletes are also in medal contention in wrestling, archery, golf and taekwondo.
Even winning both finals would leave India on 18 golds, still behind Uzbekistan’s 20. India needs to finish at least four golds ahead of Uzbekistan on the day to climb back to fourth, and would then lead on silvers, 25 to 23 as things stand. The matches are in Japan, three and a half hours ahead of India; the IST to Japan time converter shows the local start times. Scores and the cricket final’s scorecard will be on the live cricket page, with the full fixture list on cricket matches.
