Petrol and diesel prices in India are revised daily by state-owned oil marketing companies (Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum) based on international crude oil prices and the rupee-dollar exchange rate, then vary by state because of differing VAT and cess rates — which is why the same fuel can cost noticeably more or less just across a state border.
