How does this compare to LPG, PNG and Auto Gas?

₹/kg, ₹/SCM and ₹/litre can't be compared directly. Converting each to cost per kWh of usable energy is the only fair comparison - national averages here, see any city's own page for its real local prices.

Fuel Avg. market price Cost per kWh Relative cost
PNG (this page) ₹49.47 ₹4.67/kWh best
LPG ₹973.14 ₹4.97/kWh +6%
Auto Gas ₹38.13 ₹5.53/kWh +18%
CNG ₹95.86 ₹7.32/kWh +57%
Petrol (reference) ₹106.36 ₹10.97/kWh +135%

PNG (₹4.67/kWh) works out cheaper than LPG (₹4.97/kWh) here, about 6% less per unit of energy, on top of PNG's convenience and safety advantages.

Energy content used: LPG 13.8 kWh/kg, CNG 13.1 kWh/kg, PNG 10.6 kWh/SCM, Auto LPG 6.9 kWh/litre, petrol 9.7 kWh/litre (reference only). National averages shown - a specific city can differ meaningfully from these.

What is PNG (piped gas)?

PNG, or Piped Natural Gas, reaches homes through underground pipelines and is billed by the standard cubic metre (SCM). Whether it's cheaper than LPG per unit of energy now depends on your city: 2026's LPG price revisions closed a gap that used to favour PNG almost everywhere, so in some cities (like Delhi) the two now cost about the same per kWh, while PNG still runs cheaper in others. See the energy comparison above for your own city's actual numbers. What PNG reliably offers regardless of price is convenience (no cylinder booking or delivery wait) and safety (no cylinder to store).

Why does the price vary by city?

There's no single national price. Each city gas distribution (CGD) company - IGL in Delhi NCR, MNGL around Pune, and 300+ others licensed city-by-city - sets its own retail price based on its network costs, gas procurement, and transport. Natural gas also sits outside GST, so each state's VAT applies on top and varies the final price further, the same way petrol and diesel differ state to state.

When do these prices change?

LPG cylinder prices are revised once a month, on the 1st, by the state-owned oil marketing companies. CNG and PNG have no fixed schedule - each CGD operator revises its own price whenever its costs (gas procurement, network expenses) or the state's VAT rate change, which can mean weeks or months between revisions. This page checks for updates daily and only ever shows a "last revised" date it has actually observed, never a predicted one for CNG/PNG.

How many cities have PNG prices listed here?

PNG prices are tracked for 39 cities on this page. 34 of them have an independently observed price; the rest share an identical rate with a nearby city in the same distribution zone (each still has its own page, just consolidated for search indexing - see the note on this page for details).
