What do these numbers mean?
These are mandi (wholesale agricultural market) prices, reported daily to Government of India portals under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The modal price is simply the most common transaction price for that commodity at that market on the day, quoted per quintal (100 kg). Because it reflects wholesale trade between farmers or traders and buyers rather than a retail sale, it usually runs lower than what you'd actually pay at a local market. Like fuel and gold prices, wholesale rates for export-linked crops also move with international markets and the rupee's exchange rate.
